I enjoy traveling to Europe, but long flights and busy travel seasons can be overwhelming. Instead, I decided to visit St. Augustine, Florida, for a taste of Spain without leaving the United States. I was able to admire beautiful architecture and savor Spanish cuisine right in my home state. Traveling around Spain has always been a dream of mine, especially as a lover of wine, food, and stunning architecture.
Although I have visited Barcelona during a Mediterranean cruise, I have not had the opportunity to explore more of the country. Given the current circumstances, long-haul flights are not ideal, and planning an international trip is not feasible on short notice.
Fortunately, St. Augustine, Florida, is located just an hour away from my hometown of Jacksonville. Despite having visited the city several times, I had yet to fully immerse myself in its Spanish influences. Here is my experience in finding a European vacation alternative right in my backyard.
I made sure to visit the Villa Zorayda Museum, which was inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Spain. The museum’s architecture was a sight to behold, with intricate details in each room. The audio tour provided fascinating insights without overwhelming me with information.
Throughout the city, Spanish influence is evident in various architectural landmarks. The Ponce de Leon Hall, now a part of Flagler College, showcases stunning Spanish Renaissance architecture. Another highlight is the Lightner Museum, which hosts community events in addition to art exhibitions.
During my visit, I indulged in delicious empanadas and pastries at the Spanish Bakery & Café on St. George Street. I also enjoyed a glass of white sangria at the iconic Columbia Restaurant, known for its authentic Spanish flavors. To end my day, I explored the historic Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the US, where I learned about the rich history of the area.
Overall, my visit to St. Augustine provided a unique blend of Spanish culture and history, offering a taste of Europe right in my own backyard.
