Europe, the United Kingdom, and the surrounding regions are rich in opportunities for companies specializing in defense, biotech, space, and energy, according to South Australian trade and investment representatives. Agent General David Ridgway and trade and investment manager Pallavi Mishra are optimistic about the export potential for South Australian goods and fresh inventions in Europe.
Mishra, who was appointed as the trade and investment manager for Europe in October last year, emphasized the “new economic corridor that Germany has with Australia” and the potential hydrogen export play to Germany. Ridgway, based in London, is excited about the opportunities for South Australia in the UK, particularly via the AUKUS pact and the recently signed Free Trade Agreement between Australia and the UK.
Mishra highlighted the interest of the European space sector in Australia. With abundant land for launch sites and testing centers, South Australia is identified as a state that could play a major role for European companies in the space industry. The Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement, effective as of May last year, removed the bulk of tariffs on Australian goods exported to the UK, opening up opportunities for Australian exporters.
Another significant opportunity is through AUKUS, with planned nuclear submarine builds at Osborne. Minister Champion highlighted the significance of the AUKUS opportunity, including the defense industry. Ridgway emphasized the need to educate potential buyers about South Australia and advised South Australian exporters to focus on export accreditation and research on labeling.
